Dr. Jimmie Smith, Jr.
Dr. Jimmie Smith, Jr., is an associate professor of practice in the Bachelor of Science in Public Health Program. He earned his MD from Wayne State University School of Medicine, a Master of Public Health from Fort Valley State University, and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Johnson C. Smith University. As an adjunct professor, Dr. Smith has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses related to Health Behavior, Public Health and the Environment, and Public Health Management at Mercer University in the College of Health Professions. He also has served as the Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary for Health and 16th Surgeon General of the United States, served as Deputy Director of Clinical Services for the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness, and prior to returning to leading the Macon-Bibb County Health Department from 2021-2026, served as the Senior Deputy for Health Science in the Chronic Disease Section at the Georgia Department of Public Health. Dr. Smith is an active member of the American Public Health Association and the Georgia Public Health Association and serves on the Review Committee for the Public Health Accreditation Board.
